I recently read a great book on oil painting called
Oil Painting Essentials by Gregg Kreutz. Gregg Kreutz's paintings have been in many juried shows, and won numerous honors. He teaches painting at Scottsdale Artists School in Arizona , The Fechin Institute in New Mexico and Art Students League in New York City.I found this book very interesting. I love oil painting, and it's great to get a unique perspective on how to make my paintings better. This book is filled with personal works of art done by the author and they are outstanding. To take tips and advice from someone who creates such amazing works of art is great. The author talks about accuracy, depth and drama in your paintings and how to master them.
The book isn't filled with a bunch of rules, but it's more of an intuitive guide. There are lots of helpful tips. There are great lists of what not to do that are helpful to break bad habits. He talks about things like light and shadow, movement, and types of strokes. He also provides step by step instructionals that show you how to get started and work your way through a painting. I found that very helpful, to actually have a starting point that makes sense. I really learned a lot from this great book.
